How the levels work

Every language deck on Flashlingo comes in three levels, so you can start where you actually are instead of where a textbook assumes you are.

  • Beginner โ€” the 500 highest-frequency words: greetings, numbers, everyday objects and simple phrases.
  • Intermediate โ€” broader everyday vocabulary spread across 24 topic categories, from food and travel to family and work.
  • Expert โ€” less common but genuinely useful words that push you past textbook basics toward natural, fluent vocabulary.

Tips for learning Italian vocabulary faster

  • Italian is highly phonetic โ€” words are pronounced almost exactly the way they're spelled, so once you learn the pronunciation rules you can read most Italian words aloud correctly on sight.
  • Nouns are gendered and often predictable from their ending: words ending in -o are usually masculine, -a usually feminine.
  • Double consonants genuinely change meaning (pena = pain/sorrow, penna = pen) โ€” Italian pronunciation rewards paying close attention to them.
  • You already know more Italian than you think: piano, pizza, studio, and dozens of other everyday English words are Italian loanwords.
  • Use Hard mode to practice spelling from memory โ€” it's especially useful in Italian, where double letters are easy to drop if you're only recognizing words, not producing them.

A few words to start with

Ciao (hi / bye), Grazie (thank you), Per favore (please), Sรฌ / No (yes / no), and Arrivederci (goodbye, formal) are the essentials to start with.

FAQ

Is Italian easy if I already know Spanish or French?

Often, yes โ€” Italian shares a huge amount of vocabulary with other Romance languages, so recognition tends to come faster if you've studied a related language before.

Why does pronunciation matter so much for vocabulary?

Because Italian spelling is phonetic, mispronouncing a word usually means you'll also mis-hear or misspell it later โ€” getting the sound right early saves relearning down the line.

Which level covers travel basics?

Beginner and Intermediate together cover the everyday, travel-friendly vocabulary; Expert is aimed at learners who already feel comfortable with day-to-day conversation.
